One man, one lorry, and over 30 years on the road
Ady Durnford started out as an arable farmer. He moved into transport to haul grain, and it grew from there. Over three decades later, he's still at it, running AFD Transport Ltd from his base in Balcombe, West Sussex.
This isn't a big outfit with a fleet of lorries and a call centre. It's Ady, his 8-wheel Scania grab lorry, and a phone that he actually answers himself. That's the way he likes it, and it's the reason his customers keep coming back.
He's been trading since 1992, through recessions, construction booms and everything in between. Most of his work still comes from word of mouth and repeat customers, which tells you everything you need to know.
Ady personally sourced and specified his 8-wheel Scania grab lorry. It carries up to 16 tonnes per load and is fitted with a hydraulic grab crane for fast, efficient loading and unloading.
Customers regularly comment on how smart it looks, and that's no accident. Ady takes pride in keeping it clean and well-maintained. It's his livelihood, and it shows.
AFD stands for Adrian Francis Durnford, but everyone calls him Ady. His son Oliver is helping to bring the business into the digital age, building this website and making sure more people across Sussex can find him.
Ady has always worked for himself, first as a farmer, then as a haulier. He still enjoys visiting farms and equestrian yards, staying connected to the rural community where he started. It's a family story, built on hard work and a handshake you can trust.
